Peggy Irene (Chafin) Wood passed away on January 17. She was 87. Born in Charleston, West Virginia, to Carl and Minnie Chafin, Peggy was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School. In 1943, at the age of 15, she met the love of her life, Tom Wood. After Tom’s military service in World War II, the couple married in 1947. Together they raised five daughters, moving from West Virginia to Oklahoma and Colorado before settling in Indianapolis. After raising her own children, Peggy nurtured hundreds more as a reading tutor in the Indianapolis Public Schools. She loved her husband and her children, she loved other people’s children, she loved her friends, and she loved her church. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, the Rev. Dr. Thomas E. Wood; five daughters, Anita Kay (Steve) Schrader, Deborah Jean (Kerry) Wiggerly, Mary Beth (Willie) Storie, Kathryn Suzette Wood, and Sherri Lynne (Chris) Emmons; 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She loved, and was loved, deeply. A memorial service will be held at Eastgate Christian Church on January 21, 2015 at 11:00 am. Calling will begin at 10:00 am at the church.
